OME Feb 2nd

Todays Lecture was all about how type brought different art forms. Posters were the big main thing but since they were so big the woodcuts were not large enough. 1870 lithograph printing improved. The Victorian Era had a impact on graphic design, type and other art forms. As books began to come out they weren't produced as nicely as they should have and could have been, designers didnt really put any thought into the books. Chromolithography - hand drawn using multiple lithographic stones to print component colors. Louis Prang was a very important man, he had the first art journal, and designed the first american christmas card and other greeting cards. Magazines and other printed forms became very popular, u had the monthly magazine, the weekly, and the scandalous one. Thomas Nast was the father of the american political Cartoons. There was a rise in advertising agencies, close to the growth of the magazine. Then along came William Morris and he inspired the rehabilitation on the book. Guilds were formed around 18882, Century guild linked graphic design to architecture and the Earny press linked arts and crafts to art nouveau.
