OME Feb 23rd Todays lecture we talked about Pakastil- meaning poster style. Posters were the dominant form of advertising and commercials. Pictorial modernism pioneered from the naturalistic and illustrative, and iconic symbols. Synthetic Cubism constructed the "sign" in graphics and an outward appearance of the object. Bernhard was known for him minimalim posters. Also led graphic design to be more than one medium. He also was known for his graphic identities. The we talked about Realism and Abstract posters all about war posters and propoganda. Plakastil propoganda which boosted morale, fund raising, and promote readiness. This is where the famous Uncle Sam poster came from. Then we talked about Futurism and its influence on the war, and the mechanic age also how DADA and Typographic Materiality, how type was used to tell a story visually and verbally. This developed more posters using type as images and scattering the text across the page creating visual shock expression. When words began to be scattered across the page other artists like John Heartsfield began to make photomontages of images as visual communication. This style of photomontages was also used in propoganda images, it was basically a weapon against the nazi. Automatism was not neccesarily a style or an aesthetic but a way of thinking and knowing- dreams and drugs- but a pure psychic excerise. Which introduced Max Ernst a surrealist who juxtaposed images with collages and did photomontages. Dali is also an example of a surrealist artist. Then there was Man Ray who pioneered modern photographic expression, and he manipulated photographs. Automatism became a formalized part of the designers skill in DADA and Surrealism.
